This recipe offers a delightful combination of creamy, cheesy, and smoky flavors, perfect for a hearty breakfast or brunch.
Ingredients
Scale
For the French Toast:
- 3 Eggs
- 40 milliliters Milk
- 1 pinch Salt
- 2 slices White Bread
- Butter to taste
Toppings:
- 2 slices Ham
- 2 slices Emmental Cheese
Instructions
- Prepare the egg mixture: In a shallow dish, beat together 1 egg, 40 milliliters of milk, and a pinch of salt until well combined. This mixture will be used to soak the bread and give it that rich, custardy texture.
- Soak the bread: Lay both slices of white bread in the egg mixture, allowing them to soak for a few seconds on each side so they absorb enough liquid without becoming too soggy. Turn the slices over carefully to soak the other side.
- Cook the French toast: Heat a large frying pan over medium heat and add a knob of butter. Swirl the butter to coat the pan evenly. Add the soaked bread slices to the pan (cook one at a time if your pan is small). Fry each slice for two to three minutes per side or until they turn a light golden brown and develop a crispy exterior.
- Fry the egg: After removing the French toast, add a little more butter if needed to the pan. Crack in one of the remaining eggs and fry for three to four minutes or until the yolk reaches your preferred doneness.
- Assemble the dish: Place one slice of French toast on each plate, then layer each with one slice of ham and one slice of Emmental cheese. Top each with a fried egg. Optionally, sprinkle with freshly ground black pepper. Serve immediately to enjoy the best combination of warm, melty cheese and savory ham atop the fluffy French toast.
Notes
- For extra flavor, you can lightly toast the bread slices before soaking them to add more crunch.
- Use day-old bread for better soaking without falling apart.
- Adjust the cooking time of the fried egg depending on whether you prefer runny or fully cooked yolks.
- This recipe can be customized with different cheeses or meats based on your preference.
- Use low-fat milk or a milk alternative to reduce calories if desired.
