Description
A simple and delicious recipe for crispy tofu, perfectly seasoned and pan-fried to golden perfection. This recipe uses firm tofu coated in a flavorful spiced cornflour mix and cooked in a non-stick frying pan until crunchy on the outside and tender inside, making it a fantastic plant-based protein option.
Ingredients
Scale
Tofu
- 400g block firm tofu
Coating
- 3 tbsp cornflour
- ½ tsp garlic granules
- ½ tsp smoked paprika
- ½ tsp fine sea salt
- ½ tsp ground black pepper
For Frying
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
Instructions
- Drain the tofu: Wrap the tofu block in 4-5 sheets of kitchen paper and place it on a plate. Put something heavy on top, like a wooden chopping board or a tray with tins, to press out excess moisture. Leave it for 20 minutes to drain well.
- Prepare the coating: In a small bowl, mix together the cornflour, garlic granules, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper until evenly combined.
- Cut the tofu: Unwrap the tofu from the paper, cut it in half through the center, then cut into triangles, cubes, or strips depending on your preference.
- Coat the tofu: Toss the tofu pieces in the spiced cornflour mixture to ensure each piece is completely coated with the seasoning.
- Fry the tofu: Heat the vegetable oil in a large non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat. Fry the tofu pieces for 2-4 minutes on each side until golden, crispy, and browned at the edges. Smaller cubes take about 2 minutes per side; larger triangles take about 4 minutes per side. Cook in batches as needed, adding more oil if the pan becomes dry.
- Drain and season: Remove the fried tofu and drain on kitchen paper to remove excess oil. Add a pinch of salt on top while still warm for extra flavor. Serve immediately for best texture and taste.
Notes
- Pressing the tofu thoroughly is essential for achieving a crispy exterior.
- Adjust the frying time based on the size of your tofu pieces to ensure even cooking.
- You can substitute smoked paprika with regular paprika or chili powder for a different flavor profile.
- For a gluten-free version, ensure your cornflour is certified gluten-free.
- Serve crispy tofu as a snack, salad topping, or in wraps for a versatile plant-based addition to meals.
