Ingredients
Scale
Blue Raspberry Syrup
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup fresh or frozen raspberries
- 1/2 cup fresh or frozen blueberries
- 1/4 teaspoon blue food coloring gel (optional, for vibrant color)
- 1/4 teaspoon raspberry extract (optional, for enhanced flavor)
- 1/8 teaspoon citric acid (optional, for tartness and preservation)
Lemonade
- 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (from about 6–8 lemons)
- 4–5 cups cold water (adjust to taste)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste, depending on lemon tartness)
Garnishes
- Lemon slices
- Fresh raspberries and blueberries (optional)
- Ice cubes
Instructions
- Combine Sugar and Water: In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup granulated sugar and 1 cup water. Place the saucepan over medium heat to start dissolving the sugar.
- Add Berries: Add the raspberries and blueberries to the saucepan with the sugar water mixture.
- Simmer and Mash: Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally to dissolve all the sugar. Once simmering, use the back of a spoon or a potato masher to gently mash the berries, releasing their juices and flavor.
- Continue Simmering: Lower the heat to low and let the berry mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning and allow the syrup to thicken slightly.
- Strain the Syrup: Remove from heat. Pour the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve lined with cheesecloth (optional) into a heat-resistant bowl. Press the solids with a spoon to extract as much syrup as possible, then discard solids.
- Add Optional Ingredients: Stir in blue food coloring gel, raspberry extract, and citric acid if using, to boost color, flavor, and tartness.
- Cool and Store Syrup: Let the syrup cool completely and transfer it into an airtight container or glass jar. Refrigerate for up to 2 weeks. The syrup will thicken further as it chills.
- Squeeze the Lemons: Extract about 1 cup of lemon juice from 6 to 8 fresh lemons, removing any seeds.
- Make Simple Syrup (Optional): For a smoother sweetness balance, heat 1/2 cup sugar with 1/2 cup water until sugar dissolves. Cool before use.
- Mix Lemonade Base: In a large pitcher, combine lemon juice, sugar (or cooled simple syrup), and 4 cups cold water. Stir thoroughly until sugar is dissolved.
- Adjust Taste: Taste your lemonade; add more sugar/syrup if too tart or more lemon juice/water if too sweet, to your preference.
- Add More Water: Add the remaining 1 cup water or more if needed to reach desired dilution and taste.
- Chill: Refrigerate the lemonade for at least 30 minutes to meld flavors and chill thoroughly.
- Prepare Glasses: Fill glasses with ice to keep the drink cold.
- Add Blue Raspberry Syrup: Pour 2-3 tablespoons of the prepared blue raspberry syrup into each glass.
- Top with Lemonade: Fill glasses with chilled lemonade, leaving a little space at the top for stirring.
- Stir Gently: Give each glass a gentle stir to blend the syrup and lemonade evenly.
- Garnish: Add lemon slices and fresh raspberries and blueberries if desired for an attractive presentation.
- Serve Immediately: Serve your refreshing Blue Raspberry Lemonade immediately and enjoy the burst of summery flavors!
Notes
- You can adjust the sweetness by varying the amount of sugar or simple syrup used in the lemonade base.
- The optional blue food coloring gel intensifies the blue raspberry color but can be omitted if you prefer a natural look.
- Citric acid adds tartness and acts as a preservative in the syrup, but omit if you prefer a more natural syrup.
- The blue raspberry syrup can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks and used in other beverages or desserts.
- For a sparkling version, substitute some or all of the water in the lemonade with sparkling water just before serving.
- Use fresh lemons preferably for best flavor and brightness.
- Make sure to strain the syrup well to avoid seeds and pulp in your drink.
