Description

A delicious and healthier twist on the classic beef burger served with spicy sweet potato chili chips. This recipe features extra-lean beef patties flavored with grated onion, Parmesan, and chili flakes, served on wholemeal buns with fresh vegetables and tangy pickles. The sweet potato chips are oven-baked with chili for a crispy, flavorful side.

Ingredients

Scale

Sweet Potato Chili Chips

  • 4 large, roundish sweet potatoes, cut into chunky chips
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp chili flakes, plus a pinch
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Beef Burgers

  • 400g pack extra-lean beef mince
  • 1 onion, grated
  • 1 tbsp grated Parmesan
  • 1 tbsp tomato ketchup
  • Lots of black pepper

To Assemble

  • 4 small wholemeal buns, halved
  • 1 Little Gem lettuce, leaves separated
  • 1 beef tomato, sliced
  • 1 red onion, sliced (optional)
  • 4 pickles or gherkins, halved

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 220°C (200°C fan)/gas mark 7 to get it ready for baking the sweet potato chips and burgers.
  2. Prepare Sweet Potato Chips: Toss the chunky sweet potato chips with olive oil, 1 teaspoon of chili flakes, and season with salt and black pepper. Spread them out evenly in a single layer on a large baking tray to ensure crispiness and even cooking.
  3. Bake Chips: Place the tray in the oven and bake for about 30 minutes, turning the chips halfway through to promote even browning and a crispy texture.
  4. Make Burger Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the extra-lean beef mince with the remaining pinch of chili flakes, grated onion, grated Parmesan, tomato ketchup, and plenty of black pepper. Mix well to ensure the flavors are evenly incorporated.
  5. Shape Patties: Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each into a burger patty, ensuring they are compact so they cook evenly.
  6. Bake Burgers: About 10 minutes before the chips are done, place the burger patties on a baking tray and bake for 10 minutes until they are cooked through.
  7. Prepare Buns and Toppings: While the burgers cook, slice the wholemeal buns in half. Layer one half of each bun with Little Gem lettuce, beef tomato slices, and red onion slices if using.
  8. Assemble Burgers: Place the baked burgers on top of the prepared buns, then cover with the top halves of the buns. Serve immediately with the sweet potato chili chips and pickles or gherkins on the side.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, soak sweet potato chips in cold water for 30 minutes before cooking, then dry thoroughly.
  • You can adjust the chili flakes amount according to your preferred spice level.
  • Extra-lean beef minter helps reduce fat content but keeps the burgers flavorful with the addition of Parmesan and onion.
  • Wholemeal buns add fiber and nutrients compared to white buns.
  • Optional red onion adds a sharp bite to balance the sweetness of the tomato and chips.
